Regular pillow or CLSN neck pillow: what's the real difference?
You buy a pillow because the old one is flat. You put on a new one, and three months later you're up again with the same stiff neck. That's not bad luck. That's how a regular pillow works.
What a regular pillow actually is
A standard pillow is a bag of filling. Polyester fibers, down, or a mix. That filling has no shape. It takes on the shape of what presses on it, and then shifts to the sides.
That means three things. When you dive into it, it's too high, so your head is pushed forward. Halfway through the night, the filling has shifted away and your neck is too low. And after a few months, it doesn't bounce back at all: you're sleeping on a pancake and only notice it when your neck has been bothering you for weeks.
Your neck muscles do that work. Every night, for hours. That's why you wake up stiff even though you were in bed for eight hours.
What the CLSN Ergonomic Neck Pillow does differently
This pillow is not a bag of filling. It's a molded shape of high-density memory foam, and that shape does the work your neck muscles are doing now.
- The hollow in the middle cradles the back of your head, so it isn't pushed forward.
- The raised edge fits precisely under your cervical vertebrae and fills the space that remains empty with a flat pillow.
- The side cutouts provide a place for your forearm. Your shoulder isn't flattened and your hand doesn't fall asleep.
- Memory foam slowly springs back. It doesn't shift to the edges and doesn't lose its height halfway through the night.
In short: a regular pillow fills space. This pillow maintains a posture.
Side-by-side
| Regular pillow | CLSN Ergonomic Neck Pillow | |
|---|---|---|
| Filling | Loose fibers or down | High-density memory foam |
| Height during the night | Sinks, shifts to the side | Stays consistent from 11 PM to 7 AM |
| Neck support | Random, depending on how you fluff it | Fixed edge precisely under your cervical vertebrae |
| Space for your arm | None | Cutout on both sides |
| Side and back sleepers | One height for all | Two sides: 8 cm and 12 cm |
| Lifespan of the shape | Often flat within six months | Foam springs back into shape |
| Cover | Usually fixed | Removable with zipper, washable at 30 degrees |
Side sleeper or back sleeper? Just flip it
The pillow is 62 x 37 cm and has two heights. The 12 cm side is for side sleepers: that's approximately the distance between your shoulder and your ear, so your neck stays in line with your spine instead of bending downwards. The 8 cm side is for back sleepers, where your head is less far from the mattress.
Do you alternate sleeping positions? Then just flip it over, or choose the height you use most often.
Getting used to it is part of the process
We're not going to pretend you'll wake up a different person on the first night. Your neck will receive support it's not used to, and it might feel strange for the first three to seven nights. That's normal. Give it a week before you make a judgment.
That's why you get 30 days. Sleep on it, wash the cover, truly use it. If you don't like it, send it back and get your money back.
What it costs
The CLSN Ergonomic Neck Pillow costs 64.95 euros, with free shipping from the Netherlands. Available in white, black, blue, and grey. A separate extra pillowcase is 19.95 euros, handy if you want to change it without sleeping on bare foam for a night.
Consider it compared to a 15-euro pillow that you replace every year because it's flat. And compared to the mornings when your neck is already stiff before your day has even begun.
